Cold Weather and Joint Pain: Myth vs Fact

‘I can feel it in my bones…’

We’ve all heard someone say that when the temperature drops, they feel in their joints. It’s a phrase that captures a very real experience for many people, especially those living with arthritis or joint conditions.  As winter sets in, many people notice their joints feel stiffer or more painful. It’s a common belief that cold weather causes joint pain – but is that really true? Let’s see what the science (and physiotherapy) actually say…

Myth 1: Cold weather causes joint pain.

Fact: Cold temperatures wont damage your joints.  What happens is that lower temperatures cause muscles to tighten and circulation to slow, which can increase stiffness making conditions like arthritis feel worse.

Myth 2: Rain makes arthritis flare.

Fact: There’s no strong evidence that rain triggers pain. However, changes in barometric pressure can affect how tissues expand and contract, which is why people with arthritis may notice more discomfort.

Myth 3: Resting more in winter helps.

Fact: Staying still can actually make stiffness worse. Movement lubricates joints, and improves circulation. Even gentle activity indoors – like stretching, Pilates or walking – can ease winter aches.

Myth 4: Only medication can help

Fact: Lifestyle strategies are powerful. Keeping warm with layers, staying hydrated, and maintaining regular movement all reduce discomfort. Physiotherapy exercises tailored to your condition can be more effective than solely relying on painkillers.
