Physiotherapy for Persistent Pain

Physiotherapy for persistent pain at Plym Physio uses an individual, evidence-based approach to reduce disability, improve function and quality of life.

Are you suffering from persistent pain?

Persistent, or chronic pain affects over 1 in 3 adults and is defined by pain lasting for more than 3 months. Often it does not respond to standard medical treatment and as such leaves a lot of unanswered questions for patients and practitioners alike.

There are a lot of ‘brain’ considerations to take into account when treating persistent pain which therefore makes every individuals experience and situation unique. For example someone who has lived with fibromyalgia all their life may well have a different attitude to movement compared to someone who has had symptomatic arthritis in their knee for 6 months and limits their ability to play tennis 3 times a week. But both would be described as persistent pain.

There are lots of changes that happen in the body and brain so dealing with both and re-educating both is crucial. Although pain becomes the focus its the disability this causes that ultimately influence the prognosis and most people we see want to be able to do more even if they can’t resolve the pain. Most have been told, or more likely, realised that their pain probably won’t ever fully resolve but they DO want to be less disabled by it and have a better quality of life.

How Plym Physio can help by offering physiotherapy for persistent pain

Here at Plym Physio we take a very individual tailored approach.

  • We take a thorough history and ask a LOT of questions as we want to make sure all the obvious medical interventions have been made – medication, investigations.
  • Then we start looking at how we can modify pain with exercises, manual therapy, electrotherapy, acupuncture.
  • Then we start looking at capacity and function. What can you do now, what do you want to be able to do in the future and how do we go about achieving that.
  • Once we are on that ‘rehabilitation’ road it can carry on down the 1:1 route or head off down in the direction of our classes. We have several in place and all have been designed to improve core concepts – mobility, strength, biomechanical efficiency, balance.

Ultimately confidence is improved, capacity and function are increased and we have some happier people!

Our goal isn’t just to treat pain, but to help you move better, do more, and live well.
