Can you walk 30minutes a day, every day, for a month with Plym Physio?
Walking is one of the of the most effective and accessible forms of exercise. No gym membership, no fancy equipment, no complicated training programme required, just you, your trainers and 30 minutes of your time.
Almost one in four UK adults are now considered ‘physically inactive’ meaning they complete under 30 minutes of moderate exercise a week. To help change this the NHS has launched a new initiative, a Marathon a Month challenge – encouraging people to walk 30 minutes everyday , adding up to the equivalent of a marathon.
Inspired by this, we at Plym Physio are launching our own monthly challenge: a simple, achievable commitment to walk 30 minutes a day and support our community in moving more and building healthier habits. Each month the whole team at Plym Physio will be embarking on this challenge as well as encouraging our patients to also try and walk daily.
Walking for just 30 minutes a day delivers:
Better heart health by lowering blood pressure and improving circulation.
- Regular walking reduces risk of cardiovascular disease by 30%.
Boosts mood by reducing stress and better sleep.
- It’s linked to lower rates of anxiety and depression – especially when done outdoors.
Builds stronger joints and improved mobility.
- Walking is one of the most effective long- term strategies for people with arthritis.
Support weight management as you can burn up to 200 calories per 30 min walk.
- Over a month that’s the equivalent of burning an extra 6,000 calories.
Reduces the risk of chronic diseases:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Stroke
- High blood pressure
- Certain cancers
- Cognitive decline
Can extend healthy life expectancy up to 4 years if done 5 x per week
Tips to staying consistent :
- Start with just 10-15 minutes a day and build up gradually.
- Choose enjoyable routes, coastal paths, neighbourhood loops.
- Bring a friend, with all the talking you will forget about the walking.
- Listen to music, podcasts or mindful silence.
- Tracking you progress using an app or calendar will help you stay motivated.
- Try mixing up your pace and enjoy slow walks, brisk walks and hilly walks.
The real goal isn’t about distance – its about creating a daily habit that transforms your health. Walking is gentle, achievable and one of the most powerful tools for long term wellbeing.
If you want to start the 30 minute walk a day challenge, then all you need to do it monitor the length of time you walk each day and how far, and add it all up at the end to find out just how far you have walked – you may find out you have walked a marathon, or even two.
If you think you’d like a bit of time to prepare and use September to get ready. Here are some great little exercises the team has recorded that will help prepare your joints and muscles.
