**Military Style Strength and Conditioning Class**
In my experiences working within the Military Rehabilitation environment we often see chronic back and lower limb injuries that respond well to strength and condition techniques. The reason we utilise this approach is to one target muscle groups that an individual is under using, preferring their more dominant muscle groups. The most common example of this is the over use of Anterior chain (front of our body) and under use of the posterior chain (rear of our body). Secondly we would concentrate on how people exercise (technique), if this is not correct the wrong muscle groups are engaged, resulting in; at best not training the muscles the exercise was design to improve (cheating) and worse injuring/per-longing injury (healing). Thirdly we look at a well-balanced and structured programme to reduce the likelihood of; one area being targeted to often, not allowing sufficient recovery, increased muscles are stressed and once again increases the likelihood of injury.
Strength and conditioning can sound scary (it really isn’t), however, this is usually because the participants are not treated as individuals, given humongous programmes, that are to higher end. Most exercise prescribers can progress exercise, but ‘All’ exercise prescribers, should be able to regress exercise. 1. To teach the correct technique. 2. To not overload the participant’s bodies ability. 3. Promote healing (if required).
My experience working with Military personnel (active work environment), is they have mostly done the exercises before, but their technique is poor, they tend to overuse their anterior chain (front of the body) and as a result stress other parts of their bodies. Having said this, people with chronic lower back pain and other injuries respond well and can recover quicker when shown the correct methods of exercise, given exercise targeted at an individual level, leading to a more productive life.
