IDENTIFYING Back pain

So what is back pain?

There can be many forms of back pain, from lower back pain caused by overworking, to many other variations. One type of back pain can be diagnosed as Sciatica, if you’re suffering with back pain and leg pain, this is likely to be Sciatica – learn more about how we can help here.

Back pain of all forms is often very disabling and depressing, affecting sleep, work, mood, and day-to-day activity.  Even if just short-term, lasting a few days from an ‘overworking’ type presentation.

In many cases, back pain can last 12 weeks or more and would still be considered ‘normal’. In these cases, we rule out conditions that would be of greater concern and liaise with GPs regarding appropriate medication. In very few cases, further investigations are done but less often than most people think.

Most back pain improves if we keep active and address posture and support issues.
Even with longstanding pain, small adjustments can help people improve their quality of life.

Types of back pain

If you suffer from regular back pain then perhaps back physiotherapy will help, get in touch to see what advice we’d give. There are several types of back pain, some of the most common include:

  • Mechanical back pain, which is caused by overuse, muscle strain, or injury to the muscles, ligaments, or discs in the back.
  • Radicular pain, which is caused by irritation or compression of a spinal nerve root. This type of pain is often described as shooting or burning and may be accompanied by numbness, tingling, and weakness in the affected limb.
  • Sacroiliac joint pain, which is caused by inflammation of the sacroiliac joint, which is located at the base of the spine and connects the spine to the pelvis.
  • Spinal stenosis, which is caused by the narrowing of the spinal canal, can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. This type of pain is often described as cramping and may be accompanied by weakness, numbness, and tingling in the legs.
  • Degenerative disk disease, which is caused by the wear and tear of the disks that cushion the spine, leading to pain and stiffness.

What Causes Back Pain?

It can be that we overuse it. For example, instead of using our big powerful leg muscles, we tend to use our spine to perform tasks and don’t think about the damage we may be causing.

In addition, lifestyles have changed in the age of desk working and driving, so mobility has been replaced by sedentary activity and little day-to-day movement, so the vast array of muscles that wrap around us can become conditioned and easy to cause damage too in what may seem otherwise easy activities.

As you may expect, back pain – with all its different terms – is the most common problem in the clinic and broader healthcare setting. If you’re struggling with back pain, make an appointment to come and see how we can help with back physiotherapy!
